According to the Travel Texas, the tourism in the Austin MSA directly supported 74,880 jobs in 2019. These jobs were in accommodations and food services; arts, entertainment, and recreation, ground transportation, retail, visitor air transportation, and other travel. The region attracted almost 30 million visitors annually (as measured by person-stays) and direct travel spending for the metro was estimated to be $9.2 billion in 2019.
In July 2020, taxable hotel receipts fell 24% in comparison to July 2019.
In the twelve months leading up to the economic shutdown, taxable hotel receipts grew on average 17% versus the same month the previous year.
The recent expansion of ABIA led to a record-setting year of travel in 2019. The total number of passengers in 2019 increase by more than 9%.
In the first two months of 2020, the total number of passengers increased by 12.5% over the first two months in 2019. March travel was down 52.1% compared to March 2019, and April travel was down 96.6%. In May, there was a slight uptick, but the number of passengers was still down 91.5% compared to May 2019. In June, the number of passengers continued to increase but was 81% lower than June 2019, and in July, passenger volume was down 75%.
