This website is an aggregation of published economic data on the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The idea for this website grew out of a desire to look at our region's whole economic picture as the Coronavirus Pandemic's economic impact unfolds. The charts will be updated as new data is released.
The Austin MSA is projected to lose 261,000 jobs, which would put the unemployment rate well above 20%. To date, about 205,000 individuals in the Austin MSA have filed unemployment claims. Across Texas, 3.4 million people have filed initial unemployment claims since March 23.
June marked a decided improvement in retail sales as shoppers resumed shopping. Adjusted retail sales were down only 1% versus June 2019 in the US. Although the data is not available for the Austin region, the trends are likely similar.
In June, taxable hotel receipts in Austin continued to be well-below the seasonal norm. The number of passengers at ABIA was down a dramatic 97% in April, 91% in May, 81% in June, and 75% in July.
The housing market has been strong this summer. In August, sales volume increase 12% and the median home price climbed 11%.
